Moving all of your possessions can be costly, especially if you are moving a significant distance. Budgeting for your move is the easiest way to make sure you don't get stuck along the way. The best way to do that is to come up with a reasonable estimate of your moving costs. Once you know where and when you'll be moving and have settled on a mode of transporting your possessions and yourself, you can start calculating your expenses.

Step 1

Calculate the cost of hiring a moving company. Most moving companies will provide cost estimates based on the distance your possessions must travel and the overall weight or footage of your belongings. Many moving companies also provide a moving estimate calculator on their website. Depending on your moving service, you might also need to pay for supplies such as boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. Be sure to factor the estimated cost of these supplies into your total estimate for moving your possessions.

Step 2

Estimate the cost of transportation. If you are driving your own vehicle to your new place, you'll need to consider fuel costs. You can do a little independent research and find out the average cost of gasoline along your route, or you can use one of several fuel calculators available on the Internet. If you are traveling by plane, train or bus, simply consider the cost of your ticket and fees for any luggage you'll be transporting. If you have one or more cars being shipped to your new location, factor that cost in as well.

Step 3

Estimate the costs of food and lodging if your move requires it. Plan on how many meals you will need to budget for before reaching your destination. Obtain an accurate forecast of lodging expenses by making reservations ahead of time.

Step 4

Include the cost of temporary storage if your move requires it. If your new place won't be ready immediately, you'll need to dish out more money to store your belongings until you can move them in. Reserve storage and obtain quotes before you make your move.

Step 5

Total your costs for moving services, personal and family travel, food, lodging and storage. This should provide you with a reasonably accurate forecast of your total moving costs.
